How to tell the difference between a security guard and a police officer
Have you ever entered in a supermarket, or in a bank, and there was a person supervising the transactions, or merchandise, but you did not know whether that man was a police officer or a security guard? If you ever found yourself in such a situation, by reading this article you will find out how to tell the difference between them.
The main difference between those two is that the police officer works for governmental organizations, and have a uniform that states where he works such as police, county police, or army, whereas, written on the uniform of the security guard is the name of the company they work for. This is the easiest way to tell the difference between them.
Another way to see if the person you are interested in works for a private security company is to look if they carry a firearm. Security companies do not have the right to carry guns, but as in other cases, there are exceptions. Also, only a police officer is allowed to arrest a person, so if the man you saw was performing an arrest, there is no doubt that he was a policeman.
If a security guard sees someone who committed a crime such as theft, or vandalism, he must alert the authorities, the only action he can take being to retain the suspect until the arrival of the police. Furthermore, if you saw that person inside a store, dressed in uniform, it is almost sure that he was a security guard, since police officers patrol on the streets, and unless it was a federal building, they do not guard properties. Both of them can work even in areas such as New York, New York City, NYC, NY, and Manhattan.
